Melchtal, Switzerland – August 4–8, 2025
The idyllic Melchtal in the canton of Obwalden became the meeting place for about 250 young members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, aged 11 to 18. Three regional church units – the stakes of Bern, St. Gallen, and Zurich – joined forces to organize a camp that combined adventure, spiritual inspiration, and social commitment.
Strong Leadership, Strong Team
The camp directors, Elsbeth and Daniel Füglistaler, served as “camp parents” and provided months of careful preparation. They were supported by additional leaders from the three stakes, numerous counselors, and an experienced kitchen team. “The preparation was enormous, but we knew: together we could create an unforgettable experience for the youth,” the Füglistalers said.
A Special Guest
On the very first evening, the youth were surprised by the visit of Brad Wilcox, professor at Brigham Young University (Utah, USA), well-known author, and until July 2025 a member of the Church’s Young Men General Presidency. For many, it was a great honor to meet him in person. With humor and warmth, he spoke directly to the youth, took time for personal conversations, and patiently answered questions.
In an evening devotional, he vividly taught the biblical story of Jacob and Esau, linking the birthright to the responsibility of today’s youth. His words left a lasting impression. “I realized that my place in the Church really matters,” summarized one participant.
Adventure in the Mountains
The program was diverse and engaging: archery, climbing, first aid, aikido, acro-yoga, creative and spiritual workshops, and survival techniques. On Wednesday, the youth went out into the mountains, choosing from five different hikes depending on their stamina and interests.
Around 50 participants spent the night under the open sky at Lake Melch – an experience of shooting stars, the Milky Way, and crisp mountain air. Those who stayed in the valley enjoyed an evening of games and campfire songs.
Night in White
One of the highlights was the “Night in White” on Thursday. After a candlelight dinner, lovingly prepared by the counselors, the youth dressed in white for a festive evening of music and dancing. “It felt like a fairytale ball – simply wonderful,” one young woman said.
Service for Women in Need
Besides fun and spirituality, the youth also engaged in service. They prepared care packages for women’s shelters in Switzerland, including hygiene items, small gifts, and uplifting messages to support women in difficult circumstances. The project turned the camp into a place where faith was translated into tangible help for others.
Spiritual Focus
The camp’s motto,“FEAR NOT” was inspired by the Savior’s words to His disciples (Doctrine and Covenants 6:36), reminding all that in Christ we can find peace and courage. Each day began with a devotional on themes such as “Fear Not,” “Doubt Not,” and “Look to Christ.” Every evening closed with a brief reflection and the camp song “FEAR NOT,” sung enthusiastically by all with live accompaniment. On Friday, a testimony meeting formed the spiritual conclusion, with youth sharing personal experiences of strengthened faith and courage.
More Than Just a Camp
The collaboration of three stakes, the dedication of countless volunteers, and the openness of the youth made the Melchtal Summer Camp something truly special. It became a place where new friendships were made, faith was strengthened, courage was built, and responsibility was embraced.
“I learned that community and faith belong together – and that we are also here to serve others,” said one youth at the close.
The Summer Camp 2025 left lasting traces – in the mountains, in the community, and in every participant’s heart.
