Rome to Launch Christmas “Giving Machines"

From 8 December, a new way for Romans to support local and global humanitarian projects this holiday season

Rome, Italy — 3 December 2025.

On Monday, 8 December, Rome will unveil the internationally recognised Giving Machines for the first time. These innovative red vending machines, part of an initiative from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, allow visitors to make charitable donations with a simple tap.

The event will happen at Piazza della Repubblica, 41 – Rome. A special "Light the World" visual presentation and light show similar to displays in New York City's Times Square and London is proposed for the Piazza Della Repubblica in Rome.

A Proven Global Initiative

Since their introduction in 2017, the Giving Machines have raised more than US $22 million, supporting hundreds of humanitarian projects in more than a dozen countries. Rome now joins cities such as New York, London, Sydney, and Manila in hosting the initiative, reinforcing the city’s commitment to compassion during the holiday season.

Throughout the Christmas season, Romans will be able to support trusted humanitarian organisations by “purchasing” items such as warm clothing, meals, hygiene kits, vaccinations, and emergency devices.

This year’s Giving Machines will support the work of UNICEF, The Community of Sant’Egidio, and the Rome Chapter of the Italian Red Cross, three organisations deeply rooted in Italy’s humanitarian landscape. Each NGO will receive 100% of the donations made through the machines, helping fund projects for children, families, refugees, the elderly, disabled individuals, and individuals facing social or economic hardship.

Support from Civic and Cultural Leaders

Government officials, including Senate Majority Leader, President Lucio Malan, and local civic leaders, including Barbara Funari, Rome’s Alderwoman for Social and Health Policies, will participate in the launch.

Alderwoman Funari praised the initiative, noting that the Giving Machines “reflect the city’s long-standing commitment to practical solidarity and support for those who need it most during the Christmas season.”

Church Leaders Join in Celebration

Leaders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Area Seventy Elder Emanuel Petrignani and local Church representatives, will join the celebration as part of the global Light the World Christmas initiative.
