Ripples of Hope: The Church Recognizes Those Who Lift Others in Slovakia

June 19, 2025

It was an evening of gratitude, stories, and quiet heroism. On June 19, 2025, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathered in Košice with friends to celebrate something extraordinary: the steady, often unseen work of people and organizations changing lives across Slovakia.

Held in an elegant venue in the heart of the city, the event honored 14 non-governmental organizations whose daily efforts bring hope to the most vulnerable. What unfolded was more than a ceremony—it was a heartfelt tribute to compassion, collaboration, and the belief that small acts of service ripple outward in powerful ways.

The presence of numerous invited guests—including government representatives, civic leaders, and humanitarian partners—underscored the growing spirit of cooperation between the Church and Slovak civil society.

Although he could not attend in person, Mr. Alexander Daško, Plenipotentiary of the Government of the Slovak Republic for Roma Communities, sent a pre-recorded video message expressing his appreciation. His words, delivered on behalf of the Slovak Government, were a powerful affirmation of the shared values and trust between these institutions.

Matúš Német, Director of the Development Teams Department, and Darina Barančíková, regional coordinator—both representing the Office of the Plenipotentiary—attended the event in person. “Your Church truly follows Christ’s mission—to serve those in need,” said Német. “You don’t ask whether someone belongs to your Church… And we hope our cooperation will continue, because the outcomes of our shared projects are beautiful.”

Rodney and Marilyn Anderson, humanitarian missionaries for the Church in Slovakia, presented a moving slideshow highlighting the work of the 14 honored NGOs. Their presentation touched hearts, showcasing partnerships with schools, hospitals, long-term care facilities, local Red Cross chapters, and outreach programs in Slovak and Romani villages throughout eastern Slovakia.

The evening also recognized the vital role of local governments in these efforts. Five mayors and several deputy mayors were present, representing municipalities that often support or coordinate complex humanitarian initiatives. As Ján Sklár, mayor of Sobrance, explained, “Sometimes, our own projects are like stones and sand in a jar—heavy, unwieldy, and difficult to manage. Securing all the permits and resources takes time, and the results are not always clear.” And he continued, “But then you arrive with an offer to help. And when we realize together that it truly brings value, you become like living water—filling in the gaps and bringing life faster than the large stones. Sometimes we find that your water is already in the jar before the stones even arrive.”

Among the organizations recognized was ETP Slovakia (Environmental Training Programme), a civic association dedicated to supporting socially excluded communities through housing, community development, and education. Antoine De Hertogh and Nikolas Čisár represented the group. A few years ago, Nikolas was in crisis—without hope or direction—when Antoine stepped in to help. He supported Nikolas in securing essential documents, finding employment, and, most importantly, pursuing education. “Antoine is a mentor who changed my life,” Nikolas said. “Thanks to him, I’ll even be starting university in a few months.”

Today, Nikolas is not only a student but also a team member at ETP Slovakia—working alongside Antoine and others to support those who, like him, once stood at a crossroads. Once a recipient of help, he now gives back, mentoring others just as he was mentored. His journey is a living example of how one act of compassion can ripple outward, transforming not just one life, but many.

Robert Van Dalen, a member of the Czech-Slovak Mission Presidency of the Church, reflected on this very idea: “My wife and I once served as humanitarian missionaries ourselves, so we understand the ripple effect this kind of work can have. Like tossing a pebble into a pond—the waves go out further and further. Tonight, we witnessed those ripples in action.”

He continued, “In Slovakia—and not only here—there are many individuals and organizations who quietly serve those in need. They do it in the spirit of Christian love. Events like today’s allow them to feel they are not alone. They are seen, appreciated, and encouraged.”

The evening proved to be far more than a formal gathering. It became a celebration of friendship, shared purpose, and lasting impact. Guests left inspired, uplifted, and confident that the relationships forged here will continue to bless lives for years to come.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints strives to care for God’s children in meaningful ways throughout the world.
