In his conference address on 1 April 2023, Russell M. Nelson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, specifically extended an invitation to all to become peacemakers. He said, “The Saviour’s message is clear: His true disciples build, lift, encourage, persuade, and inspire—no matter how difficult the situation. True disciples of Jesus Christ are peacemakers.”

On 9 September 2023, President Nelson celebrated his 99th birthday. He was an internationally renowned surgeon and medical researcher, is a long-time leader within the Church, and above all is a committed and loving husband and father. Within his lifetime, he has traveled to over 130 countries, has filled various roles and gained valuable experiences through his global interactions with others of many different faiths and backgrounds. He is a peacemaker.

His example and teachings encourage others to be charitable and strive to be peacemakers in their daily interactions with others.

Following his invitation, members in the European area have been diligent in their efforts to apply President Nelson’s message in many aspects of their lives.

One member, Oliver Bassler from Weinfelden, Switzerland, shared his experience of when he chose to be a peacemaker while helping a friend. He said, “I have a colleague who has started his own business. However, his business has not gone so well so far, which was foreseeable. Instead of addressing and criticizing him in a know-it-all way, I encouraged him to pray for his professional success and to include Jesus Christ in his job. He took that advice to heart and things have been going better ever since.”

President Nelson’s message, centered on Jesus Christ, not only focuses on how we should become peacemakers in our lives, but also how we can draw strength from Christ’s example when times are hard.

“My desire to follow Prophet Nelson's call to be a peacemaker has been intense since the General Conference. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I don't. In times like these, I am grateful for the gift of repentance and the opportunity to try again and again. Then I am happy with small successes when I manage to calm down the situation at work or at home. My source of strength is Jesus Christ, who is my friend,” said Marcela Pálková from Uherské Hradiště, Czech Republic.

Twice a year, messages like this, shared by church leaders, inspire peace, hope and guidance in our confusing and changing world. All are invited to come seeking direction, answers to personal questions or comfort in trials as you listen to the words of a living prophet and other church leaders.
