Lighting the World during the 2023 Christmas Season

Light the World is a worldwide effort to spread the light of Jesus Christ to all mankind, regardless of location or language. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints invites all to let their lights shine by loving the people around them, sharing joy and following the example of Jesus Christ.

The video below captures how the nativity story suddenly lit up the screens on Times Square in New York City on 27 November 2023.

Below are some Light the World ideas for individuals and families to consider during the 2023 Christmas season:

  • The country-specific Light the World page provides a variety of ways to share the light of Jesus Christ. There are Christmas videos to watch and share, Christmas music to download, service ideas and much more.
  • On the Light the World page, a list can be downloaded that offers “50 Ways to Let Your Light Shine” in easy and natural ways.
  • Also found on the Light the World page is a brief preview of the European Christmas Concert that was produced especially for this Christmas season. “Witnesses of Christmas – Carols of Christ” begins streaming 10 December 2023 and can be viewed on the Light the World page or on YouTube.
  • Service ideas from the Church’s innovative new “service shuffler” can be found in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.
  • Anyone is welcome to join the Church’s official Light the World Facebook group to share inspiring stories, acts of service and ideas about how to share the light of Christ during the Christmas season. The page is in English, but posts can be made in any language.
  • The First Presidency’s annual Christmas Devotional, featuring music from the world-renowned Tabernacle Choir, is streaming now on ChurchOfJesusChrist.org. It is available in English, French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese, among other languages.

Light the World has become an annual Christmas tradition for communities throughout the world. President Russell M. Nelson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has said that the world needs the light of Jesus Christ more than ever. “I marvel at the increased goodwill and human kindness that always emerge during this sacred season. As we commemorate the birth of Him who is the Light of the World, new light is kindled in each of us. … As we follow Jesus Christ, we can make this a better world.”
