Construction Underway for the Huntsville Alabama Temple

A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Huntsville Alabama Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

Elder John D. Amos of the United States Southeast Area Presidency presided at the event, offering the dedicatory prayer on the future temple site.

“Bless this land and the holy temple that will one day stand here, that it may be a house of peace, refuge, revelation and love for all who worship within its holy walls,” he prayed.

Anabelen Lopez, a member of the Huntsville Alabama Stake, spoke about the significance of temple worship in the lives of Latter-day Saints.

“People will come to this house of the Lord and make covenants with Heavenly Father. They will learn more about Jesus Christ. They will receive greater knowledge, direction, hope, comfort, peace and power from God,” she said. “And then they will leave the temple and carry that strength with them into their homes, their families, their callings, their schools, their jobs and their trials.”

Latter-day Saints, friends and community leaders participated in the event, including a choir composed of local Primary children, who sang “I Love to See the Temple.”

High school senior Ronan Swenson of the Madison Alabama Stake has fond memories of singing that hymn when he was in Primary.

“Primary songs always connected me to the Spirit,” he said. “I grew a strong desire to go inside the temple, wishing I could join my older siblings.”

When that day came, Swenson found peace and comfort in the house of the Lord. He encouraged the youth of the Church to regularly make time to worship in the temple.

“I pray that when you are in your darkest moments, you will remember to look to the temple for uninterrupted peace and impossible healing,” he said. “I know that healing, which cannot come from any source other than God, is found in the temple.”

Over 41,000 Latter-day Saints reside in Alabama, meeting in around 75 congregations. This will be the second temple in the state, joining the Birmingham Alabama Temple.

Temples differ from the Church’s meetinghouses (chapels). All are welcome to attend Sunday worship services and other weekday activities at local meetinghouses. The primary purpose of temples is for faithful members of the Church of Jesus Christ to participate in sacred ceremonies that, through the power of Jesus Christ, allow families to be united forever.
